A practical guide to finding trustworthy eyewear manufacturers in China, based on 8 years of industry experience and real mistakes.

Table of Contents

I have been working in the eyewear industry for over 8 years, and I have seen too many buyers get burned by choosing the wrong manufacturer. Last year alone, three of my clients came to me after losing thousands of dollars to factories that looked great on paper but failed to deliver.

Here is what I have learned about finding a manufacturer you can actually trust.

## Certifications Matter, But Do Not Trust Them Blindly

Every factory will show you ISO 9001 certificates. That is table stakes. What you really want to see:

– CE marking documentation (if you sell to Europe)
– FDA registration number (for US market)
– Recent third-party audit reports, not just the certificate

Here is a trick: ask for the certification body’s contact info and verify it yourself. I caught one factory using a fake ISO certificate last year. The certification body did not even exist.

## Visit the Factory, or At Least Video Call

I know, flying to China is expensive. But a video call through the production floor tells you more than 50 emails. Things to watch for:

– Is the floor organized or chaotic?
– Do workers have proper safety equipment?
– Is there actual quality control happening, or just boxes being packed?

One time I video-called a factory that claimed 500 workers. The video showed maybe 30 people and a lot of empty space. Red flag.

## Ask the Right Questions

Do not ask “Are you a manufacturer or trading company?” They will always say manufacturer. Instead:

– “Can you show me your injection molding machines?” (Trading companies cannot)
– “What is your actual monthly output for acetate frames?” (Real numbers, not marketing speak)
– “Can I talk to a reference client in my country?” (Scammers hate this one)

## Production Capacity Reality Check

A good factory should handle:
– 50,000 to 300,000 pieces per month
– MOQ around 300-500 per style
– Sample lead time: 7-15 days
– Bulk production: 30-45 days

If they promise 5-day samples and 15-day bulk orders, they are either lying or cutting corners. Neither is good.

## Quality Control Is Not Optional

I always ask for their QC process in writing. A real manufacturer has:

1. Incoming material inspection (checking raw acetate, metal, lenses)
2. In-process checks (during cutting, polishing, assembly)
3. Final inspection before packing

If they say “we check everything” but cannot describe the process, walk away.

## The Regional Factor

Different regions in China specialize in different things:

– Wenzhou: Good for standard acetate and metal frames, competitive pricing
– Shenzhen: Higher-end stuff, better for designer brands
– Xiamen: Sports eyewear and sunglasses
– Danyang: Budget optical frames and reading glasses

I usually recommend Wenzhou or Shenzhen depending on the target market.

## My Personal Checklist

Before I work with any new factory, I go through this list:

– Verified certifications (not just photos)
– Video factory tour
– Reference check with existing clients
– Sample order first, always
– Clear written agreement on QC standards

It takes more time upfront, but it saves money and headaches later. I learned this the hard way so you do not have to.
